Uses
Xenical is a prescription weight-control medication useful for the long-term treatment of significant obesity.

Xenical can also help to improve risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar which, if not treated, could lead to other diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Each Xenical capsule contains 120 mg of the active substance orlistat, which acts as a lipase inhibitor.

Xenical is a weight loss medication that targets the absorption of fat in your body rather than suppressing your appetite. Xenical is useful for long term use and has been shown to be effective for 1-2 years. Dietary fats are inhibited from being absorbed and this allows about 30% of the fat eaten in the meal to pass through the gut undigested. This helps you to reduce and maintain your weight, as well as to minimize any weight regain.

How To Take This Medication
Xenical is taken with each meal (three times daily). Your daily fat intake should be divided equally between these three meals so you will benefit from Xenical's actions. Your Xenical medicine should be swallowed with water.

Side Effects
Loose stools and increased gas or flatulence. These symptoms are generally mild, occur at the beginning of Xenical treatment, go away after a short period of time and are particularly experienced after meals containing high levels of fat. Normally, these symptoms disappear if you continue Xenical treatment and keep to your recommended diet.

Precautions
Xenical can cause changes in your bowel habits, such as fatty or oily stools, due to the elimination of undigested fat in your stool. Xenical reduces the absorption of supplements of some fat soluble nutrients, particularly beta-carotene and vitamin E. You should therefore follow your doctor's advice in taking a well balanced diet rich in fruit and vegetables.

Xenical Side Effects
Fatty/oily stool, oily spotting, intestinal gas with discharge, bowel movement urgency, poor bowel control, or headaches may occur. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. Intestinal side effects (e.g., oily stool) may increase in intensity if you exceed your daily dietary fat allowance. Tell your doctor immediately if you have any of these unlikely but serious side effects: swelling of the feet or ankles. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

How To Use Xenical
XENICAL: Take XENICAL by mouth, generally three times daily during (or up to one hour after) each main meal that contains fat. Your daily intake of fat, protein and carbohydrate should be evenly spread over three main meals. If a meal is occasionally missed or contains no fat, skip that dose of the medication. Because XENICAL can interfere with absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (e.g., A,D,E,K), a daily multivitamin supplement containing these nutrients is recommended. Take the multivitamin at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after XENICAL (e.g., at bedtime). The effects of XENICAL may begin as soon as 1-2 days after treatment begins; noticeable weight loss will take longer.

Xenical Uses
XENICAL is used with a reduced-calorie diet to help significantly overweight persons lose weight. It also helps to prevent regaining weight previously lost. Orlistat works by blocking some of the fat normally digested by the intestine.

Xenical Precautions
Tell your doctor your medical history, including: allergies, digestive disorders (malabsorption or cholestasis), low thyroid function (hypothyroidism), other metabolism problems (e.g., oxalate kidney stones, hyperoxaluria). XENICAL should not be used if you have anorexia nervosa or bulemia-type eating disorders. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before using this medication. The manufacturer does not recommend use of XENICAL during pregnancy. It is not known whether XENICAL is excreted into breast milk. Because of the potential risk to the infant, breast-feeding while using XENICAL is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Xenical Drug Interactions
Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you use, especially of: cyclosporine, "statins" for cholesterol (e.g., pravastatin), "blood thinners" (e.g., warfarin), drugs for diabetes (e.g., insulin), other drugs used for weight loss. Cyclosporine should be taken at least 2 hours before or after orlistat to assure maximum absorption of the cyclosporine into your bloodstream. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

Xenical Overdose
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Xenical Notes
Do not share XENICAL with others. Follow your doctor-approved nutritional, reduced-calorie diet containing about 30 percent calories from fat. Also, exercise is recommended; however, first consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Missed Xenical Dose
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Xenical Storage
Store at room temperature (77 degrees F, 25 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
